Juana Pancha’s Hill

Many moons ago, on the top of the hill of Conchagua (figure 1), there was a small cave where a beautiful woman used to live. This woman was a witch, who used her magical powers to steal money from the wealthy people of those days.

That Witch was baptized as Juan Francisca Callejas, although people from her region called her Juana Pancha. She used her powers to do things that everyone thought were just a childish dream-like flying from La Unión to Managua from Managua to San Salvador or transforming mangoes into bananas. And yes, she flew like a bird, but sometimes faster, up to a point, she disappeared among clouds.

Figure 1. The hill of Conchagua in La Unión, El Salvador.

Juana Pancha flew all those massive distances to steal from wealthy people in faraway lands. She visited their palaces, farms, and even the city halls, but for an unknown reason, she had an obsession with the wealthy people of the city of Antigua Guatemala.

These acts of devilry were unimaginable because, in a blink of an eye, she moved from La Unión in El Salvador to Antigua Guatemala in the neighboring country. She traveled at the speed of the wind, when she arrived at her destiny she transformed into some homemade animal (a dog or a cat) because in that way she could steal easily without being detected.

Over the years, she stole a huge amount of money and jewelry from all over the Central American region. There was a moment that the wealthy people got desperate for these acts and wanted to get rid of the thief, once and for all!

After many months of research, some people from Guatemala found that there was a flying woman from Conchagua, and they created a plan to get rid of her.

One day, when she was traveling from La Union to Guatemala when some men ambushed and caught her. These men decided that they were going to burned Juana Pancha because of her acts of witch-crafting and stealing for more than 30 years. The same night, they burned her, and many people thought this was the end of the powerful witch Juana Pancha. However, do you think it was actually her end? Do you think she didn’t have a backup plan? Trust me, there is more.

Juana Pancha took revenge, bewitching her hiding place; therefore, no one could go in the quest for her money or possessions. If they tried, they would walk in circles, and when they found the treasure, it would vanish. Plus, if you tried to exit, you will just come back to the treasure again and again until you die, and this is the curse of Juana Pancha.

However, there is a prophecy about Juana Pancha’s Cave. The only way to free the cave from her curse, you must go on a Good Friday at three o’clock in the afternoon. Later, you must spend that afternoon and the night in the cave, until the next day.

You must be aware that you would hear and experience unbelievable things; therefore, you must be brave and prepared, so the spell will disappear, and maybe you will get a bite of Juana Pancha’s treasure. Are you ready for it? Then, good luck!
