The Mysterious Woman of The Toad River
Her legend started during the time of the civil war of El Salvador in the 1980s. Many guerrilla fighters passed through the banks of the Toad River at night, specifically, in the area where the passage of the river splits La Guacamaya and El Zapotal in Morazán. In this area, they inevitably encountered a mysterious woman (figure 1).

Many people claimed to have perceived this woman. They described her as medium height with enormous breasts, broad hips, long hair, an odd look whose laughs turned out to be deafeningly loud; therefore, they heard her from afar. However, everyone agreed her appearances were quick, lasting only a few minutes or seconds, they could barely perceive her.
Those who saw her also said she dressed only in underwear and bathed in the pools of the river at night. Plus, she had the habit of running to hide in the undergrowth.
As the days passed, the few fighters who ventured to spend the night on the Toad River continued to hear the uncontrolled laughter of such a woman. Following this, the legend of the Siguanaba began coming alive one more time. However, many said it was not her. She couldn’t return!
At the end of 1982, on the banks of the Toad River, something bizarre happened. Many carcasses appeared that looked like they died by the strange bites of a “wild animal.” The guerrilla squad deployed was worried because they had only some cows as their reserve food. Therefore, they decided it was time to hunt the beast.
Some thought that this beast was a cougar or a young tiger, which had come from the jungles in Honduras. The truth is the bites in the cattle gave them chills. Several members of the squad coordinated operations, trying to ambush it with mines and traps, but the elusive beast did not surprise them. It was cleverer than all of them together.
One day, a recent member who was a native of Morazán joined them. He told them he wasn’t sure if that beast they were seeking to hunt was an animal. He had seen the same bites all his childhood in his cattle. This always happened when the woman of the Toad River had appeared. Now, it seemed that the story of the woman of the Toad River was real! All members panicked and couldn’t sleep for days.
Every night after some drinks of chicha, the commander and his officers discussed if it was the woman of the Toad River or a fierce animal. At this point, no one was sure. They were losing their minds, some thought, it was a shapeshifter. They started to mistrust themselves. The commander was not sure what to do as his squad was going crazy. He decided that they needed to withdraw from and around the Toad River because the war was still going on. This was a worthy price to pay since it seemed the Toad River was cursed.
Even though they moved from the river, it looked like the beast kept following them. Her crazy laughs were as loud as when they were close to the river. The cattle wherever they went, it died from the same bites.
The commander was close to burnout and left all behind because it seemed the woman of the Toad River was unstoppable! They were losing all, and it seemed his squad was bringing bad luck! However, one night during the summer, he decided to come back to the Toad River and yelled:
“Mysterious woman of the Toad River! What do you want? Why are you chasing us? Leave us alone! We have done nothing to you!”
One more time, there was a maniac laugh, followed by a strong and freezing wind. Suddenly, the commander definitely saw the woman in front of him, laughing even louder and louder! HA HA HA HA HAHA! She stopped for a moment, placed a finger on her leaps like she was saying SILENCE! And she vanished in from of his eyes. The commander fainted.
Hours later, his squad discovered him and inquired him what happened because he was so pale, and it seemed someone had assaulted him. One guerrilla even noticed; he had the same bites in his left arm. He informed them what he recalled, but he wasn’t completely certain. Mysteriously, the attacks stopped, and no one ever heard of her again.
…
Two years later, a special force of the guerrilla “accidentally” caught the mysterious woman of the Toad River. They captured her off guard, but according to many testimonies, it wasn’t easy to submit to her. She resisted with maniac screams, kicks, and bites. Some described her strength as it was from several males together. They took her to a guerrilla clinic where a doctor relaxed her with sleeping pills.

By then, this woman had all the hair uprooted, her teeth were blackened, her hands and feet were full of corns, her entire skin filled with scabs and scars, her eyes looked lost, and she constantly screamed she didn’t want to be there. Many of the guerrillas who perceived her, entrusted their souls to the Almighty. Others claimed the woman was the devil incarnate.
After several days of intensive health care, food, and baths, the mysterious woman of the Toad River transformed into a charming girl of about 24 years. Now, with her hair clean, careful, silky, and very well combed, showing her brunette face with clear eyes, blunt nose, and a pretty mouth. Her body was similar to the one of a rural women from Arambala. She had generous breasts, thick ankles, and broad hips.
Days later, she began to speak normally and reported that in December 1981, the army executed many people in the Mozote, Los Toriles, La Joya, and other nearby hamlets. She saw the blood of many children, women, and men that horrific day. She fled in terror and took refuge on the banks of the Toad River. She spent about three years running away and surviving on roots, leaves, freshwater crabs, and jute. She slept under the leafiest trees to cover herself in the rain. Furthermore, over time, she didn’t have clothes and dreamed every night of the slaughter, and never spoke about it with anyone for months. She was a survivor of that massacre.

It was precisely in the guerrilla clinic where she ultimately recovered her judgment, speech ability, and even her beauty. Months later, she had sex with a horny guerrilla who never believed in the Siguanaba or any legend. He said they are just hoaxes. Suddenly, the woman got pregnant, and the commander sent her to their shelter in Colomoncagua, Honduras. In this place, an uncommon child was born. Some thought he was Cipitio’s reincarnation because he looked a little bit different, too fatty for his age. A couple of days later, his mother vanished, and her maniac laughs were heard in the Toad River one more time.
Perhaps, there is some truth about this child and his mom. Who knows, maybe she was not that survivor she said to be!
