The elders of Apaneca always said that many years ago, when the streets were some dirt and other cobblestones, at midnight every year a horseman, who was riding all over El Salvador came to the city. That horseman dressed in black rode a horse of the same color (figure 1), which fired fire from his eyes and blew smoke from his jaws when it snorted. Figure 1. Many moons ago, after the Spanish colonization was over, when it was necessary to maintain tranquility at night and remove the dangers from it, an uncommon being appeared from the beyond to bring peace and order. This being was a ghost, but no one knew what he was until one night during the summer of 1821. Some men were returning drunk and were causing a lot of troubles in their neighborhood in La Palma. They did not listen to anyone and continued their mess. However, a strong wind suddenly blew and shook the branches of the trees. It was so strong that they hit the ground immediately afterward. When they stood up, they saw the being as nothing they had ever seen in their lives. It was quite tall, perhaps 1.80m, and was headless! Most of you might have heard about some twins who transformed into the Cadejos because of their bad behavior and uncountable mischief. However, these Cadejos are mostly seen in the rural areas while the good and the bad ones are from the urban side, and their story comes from the pre-colonial era. Do you want to hear it? Are you sure? Because it’s a scary story, are you sure? So, let’s dive deep into it. It was the year 400 BCE when the first inhabitants of Quelepa, a settlement of the Lenca people, were moving to a new land, a place that was beautiful and relatively close to a volcano. Plus, it was next to an impressive river full of fresh water. In this settlement, a couple had a difficult birth of fraternal twins, the first ones in centuries. It was around 10:30 PM, and I was coming back from the wildest party of my life when I heard some strange sounds. Something was close by, but I couldn’t see it.
