The Pirate Treasures of Meanguera Island

Image
Long ago, Sir Francis Drake hid many of his treasures around the new Indies. One of these places was Meanguera Island. A place where he buried some of his finest treasures. Meanguera Island was a unique place for Sir France because it was considered a mystical land and had been inhabited long before the Spanish conquest, mainly by the Lenca and the Potones. In the year 1522, they discovered it in the expedition of Andrés Niño. Under the jurisdiction of Gil Gonzales de Dávila. He named this sector Petronila to honor Burgos bishop’s niece, who possessed the title of President of the Council of Indies, Fray Juan Rodrigo de Fonseca. Hence the current name of the Gulf of Fonseca. One day, the Spaniards discovered that Sir Francis had heard the rumors that Sir Francis had hidden some unique treasures while he was circumnavigating the Earth and stole all gold and gemstones from Meanguera, Tecapa, and Conchaguita. He was extremely greedy and thought he would return one day to collect them...

Sir Francis Drake, The First Pirate of The Pacific

Image
Sir Francis Drake was an English man of noble origins. He had a good education, wealth, and excellent life. However, he felt that something was missing in his life and decided to embark on a new journey to the New World. No one is sure what happened or why his mind changed during these months in the Atlantic Ocean, but something is clear: he became a well-known criminal and pirate over the years. Sir Drake built a solid reputation across the Atlantic due to his multiple berths and looting. Hence, his crew and hem were nicknamed “Sea Dogs.” Sir Drake sailed all his pirate adventures in the Golden Hind (figure 1), a beautiful and impotent ship that was the crown of Sir Drake’s pirate kingdom. Figure 1. Sir Francis Drake and t he Golden Hind.  ¹ Over the year 1578, Sir Drake crossed the Strait of Magellan and headed towards the Spanish Indies in the Pacific. The Frogfish

Image
The frogfish is a mythical fish (figure 1) whose scientific name is Batrachoides Boulengeri and is known as the dogfish, sorcerer fish, or zapamiche (in Spanish). All are names given by the fishermen of the Gulf of Fonseca, specifically the inhabitants of Meanguera Island. They know this curious fish is the protagonist of many rumors and anecdotes. Figure 1. The frogfish. The fish is hideous, but everyone recognizes its tremendous aphrodisiac effects, so formidable that it is known as the Sea Viagra. There is a legend from the elders of those islands that says: “If an old man in a coma tastes this soup, he runs joyfully out of the hospital without. And if a woman cannot produce milk from her breasts to feed her baby, but eats the frogfish soup, then she becomes cascades of milk!” In addition, it’s significant to highlight that the gum from this soup lasts only 10 to 15 minutes. However, the most impressive effect is the aphrodisiac in this soup. You could send your par...

The Pilona

Image
In the times when the Amerindians lived alone in the lands of Conchagua, an expected situation happened. One day, all the men gathered to give themselves the task of building a huge water container called: “The Pilona” (figure 1), at the top of a mountain called Chilagual. This was because the goddess of the waters in a dream showed their leader that in that place, he would sprout a spring that would give water to the thirsty people of the lands and their descendants forever. Figure 1. The Pilona. For the following months, the people from Conchagua worked for long periods of time without resting until they finished the Pilona. However, after they finished it, the water did not sprout as promised, not even a drop fell into the huge Pilona. After many months of an intense drought, the citizens gathered and agreed to celebrate a consecration to the goddess of the waters. During the middle of their celebration in the volcano of Conchagua, a cloud appeared in the shape of a winged...

Juana Pancha’s Hill

Image
Many moons ago, on the top of the hill of Conchagua (figure 1), there was a small cave where a beautiful woman used to live. This woman was a witch, who used her magical powers to steal money from the wealthy people of those days. That Witch was baptized as Juan Francisca Callejas, although people from her region called her Juana Pancha. She used her powers to do things that everyone thought were just a childish dream-like flying from La Unión to Managua from Managua to San Salvador or transforming mangoes into bananas. And yes, she flew like a bird, but sometimes faster, up to a point, she disappeared among clouds. Figure 1. The hill of Conchagua in La Unión, El Salvador. Juana Pancha flew all those massive distances to steal from wealthy people in faraway lands. She visited their palaces, farms, and even the city halls, but for an unknown reason, she had an obsession with the wealthy people of the city of Antigua Guatemala. These acts of devilry were unimaginable bec...

Ifraín Reventuroso and Mausimolú

Many years ago, there were two kings in some faraway lands, a king and a vice king. They were married to extremely beautiful women. One day, they decided to go out for a short trip just to appreciate their treasures and lands. The king asked the vice king: “What are they going to do with all their treasures and money?” Firstly, they thought of their wives, but they agreed they wanted to have a family that could enjoy all their wealth. A couple of days later, they decided to visit the Sage Salomón. On a Monday, they packed and said goodbye to their wives. Both kings commenced their journey in the challenging forests where many people said the sage lived. On an extremely hot summer day, they saw a shadow near a seaport and followed it. They noted an old man entering a very small hut and asked him if he knew the Sage Salomón. The old man asked them: “Why do you want to speak with him?” They told him their story, and he answered them he was that Sage, but he didn’t understand the...
