The S.S. Douglas

Around 20 years ago at the beginning of the 2000s, some fishermen started to hear some uncommon voices from the sea, to be precise Los Cóbanos Beach. The fishermen were frightened by its voices. One of them recalled that his grandfather had told him that a ship had sunk on their coasts in 1890. The ship was called S.S. Douglas. This was a beautiful and imponent English ship. His grandfather had also told him that the S.S. Douglas had sunk while carrying a shipment of 10,000 bags of golden coffee to Hamburg, Germany. That day was quite windy, and the storms were stronger than forcing the S.S. Douglas to collide off with Punta Remedios twelve miles from the Port of Acajutla. A place that since pre-Hispanic times has been important for trade and fishing. Many moons ago, long before the Spanish colonization of the Americas, a unique kid was born in a Lenca region called: Tangolona. He possessed unique and divine powers like a few people in the world. Everyone who met him said he could perform many miracles plus possessed surprising wisdom for his age, but he had a notorious physical malformation, he had several extra legs. For this reason, his parents never allowed him to play or meet with other kids in their town. The life of this kid was challenging and full of health problems. One day he was seriously ill, and this unfortunate and uncommon disease led him to his death. Nevertheless, because of his unique powers, he was allowed to talk with the beautiful  Moon  in his last minutes of life. The Frogfish

The frogfish is a mythical fish (figure 1) whose scientific name is Batrachoides Boulengeri and is known as the dogfish, sorcerer fish, or zapamiche (in Spanish). All are names given by the fishermen of the Gulf of Fonseca, specifically the inhabitants of Meanguera Island. They know this curious fish is the protagonist of many rumors and anecdotes. Figure 1. The frogfish. The fish is hideous, but everyone recognizes its tremendous aphrodisiac effects, so formidable that it is known as the Sea Viagra. There is a legend from the elders of those islands that says: “If an old man in a coma tastes this soup, he runs joyfully out of the hospital without. And if a woman cannot produce milk from her breasts to feed her baby, but eats the frogfish soup, then she becomes cascades of milk!” In addition, it’s significant to highlight that the gum from this soup lasts only 10 to 15 minutes.
